I got this as a last minute rush job, the wood for the body came from the church its going in. It is being renovated the wood was pretty bad filthy and full of nails when I got it, came out of the attic old fir planking.

The carving is 36 inches tall

I should be done with the carving today have to carve the toes and fingers hardest parts for me. have to make the cross next.

Must have been an interesting glue up.
How long did roughing cut take?
You did a great job on the Irish homestead wood ones!
Is it harder or easier to carve the 3' one?

Scott the roughout was around 3 hours with a 7/16 endmill I cleaned that up a bit with a 1/4 ballnose about another 45 min. the model I have has very little detail its good for proportions and each one I carve has its own look.

At least this fir is not all fuzzy like the last.

As for easy or more difficult each size has advantages larger is easy to get into tight spots, smaller does not need as much attention to detail.

Todays progress still needs refining I have found doing other work and coming back later helps to find a lot of the work that needs to be done.

I know my cousin who's a painter, keeps his work in the studio doing the final "touch up" over and over, until his significant other grabs it and says;
"It's DONE Wade! SIGN it!!" :)

It's great to see the CNC utilized like a true apprentice- rough things out so the master has energy and focus left for the intense and skilled handwork required to develop a true piece of art, as you've done here.

May not be his original, but enjoyed a quote from a local metal sculptor - when asked how he knew any given piece was "done":

"When I run out of time, money or both..."

Finished up it will be in its first mass tomorrow.

Considering the wood I am happy with the way it turned out.

For the nails I heated some brass screws with a torch and pounded them on a anvil, heated them again and dipped them in oil for tarnish.

The crown of thorns I made from a thorn bush in the yard.

I put 2 keyhole slots in the cross it will hang on tapcon screws, the wall is concrete from my understanding. I am not installing it my cousin is a priest and was a contractor until he was ordained, he has done most of the renovation and will be hanging it.
