I'm currently using a PC router for engraving wood signs. We're typically using a sign vinyl as a paint mask that we cut through when engraving as the wind generated by the router motor will blow just about anything else off the board. I'm wondering if we switched over to a water (or air) cooled spindle if the wind would drop significantly enough that we could use a paper transfer tape type material in lieu of the vinyl. Any advice is much appreciated.

my hsd spindle does not blow the dust off of anything.

Thanks - that was my thought. I'm assuming this a water-cooled spindle?

Most of the spindles with 24v fans don't make anywhere near the wind, nor do they make the noise of router fans. Routers have a shaft driven fan. The most noise and wind comes from shaft driven fans, whether on a router or spindle.

I have a fan cooled spindle. If you don't turn the dust collection on, most of the dust/chips from the cuts just sits on the face of what it is cutting.
