View Full Version : Another table

I milled a sugar maple a while ago one of the limbs had a curve to it so I came up with this. The benches for it came out of the same limb and follow the curve of the table.
Its not a priority project but I hope to finish it soon.

Well, it's already a beauty. If this was featured, in a gallery, down town NYC it could bring big bucks.

Brian,
I finally figured out your secret! Instead of taking the time to joint all the edges together to make one seamless piece, you leave the edges rough, put the butterflies in and we call it ART.....GENIUS! LOL
Well it is ART.......beautiful! Good job.

Looks great, do you use levelers in the feet on your table?

No sometimes I put felt pads under them the trestle design will conform to a reasonable floor before the wedges are tightened up.

Nice Brian, but a little nervous about the bark on the inside of benches:(
I had a lady visiting the house while we were building a Curly wall table with tight bark, and she leaned over the piece and caught her expensive sweater on the Maple bark:(
Just wondering how cotton sundresses and wool dress pants and such would do, as most people push back against the bench when standing up?
LOVE the spalted leg touch! :)

Scott, the benches are not done they will be sanded and bark removed still a work in progress.

Aah:)
With your tools, it's a heck of a lot easier than a 12" drawknife:)
My angle grinder and Bosch belt tend to push the wheelchair around, and I got leery after almost grinding my kneecaps a couple times:)
Going to be a beautiful set!!

Just about every chainsaw carver that I know that has been injured has not been from a saw but the angle grinder, those lancelot attachments are the worst. The arbortec pro cutter works nice.
Also stay away from harbor freight sanding backup pad disk holders I had one self destruct and a chunk of the plastic lodged in the ceiling, very lucky I did not get hit even though I wear safety gear.
Went to their site and wrote a bad review twice they never put it up or acknowledged it.
Makita backup pads are robust.

Love it. Super nice. An artist can think outside the curves to create a unique piece.

Brian are yu pouring epoxy into the gaps to seal the lines to keep food ect from falling into them??
Brian Harnett
04-11-2017, 02:02 PM
No Gene, no epoxy in the gaps that would just create movement issues down the road, our dining table we had for years was a teak outdoor table with 1/4 gaps between the top boards we used place mats and never had issues, the new dining table I made for our house is the same.

Brian,
Who's epoxy are you using for the butterflies/etc.?
West?
Yep, I bought a bunch of different backers for the Makita when I bought it. Main wood use now is with a foam back pad for the final softening of slab edges, and removing the last of the inner bark layer when I'm trying to save the natural contours. Relatively safe for my legs...I'd be scairt with those Lancelot type heads:)

Scott yes I use west system have been using it for many years, my carbon fiber bikes I ride used west for the epoxy, have not had any issues in the 16 years of using it.

Sprayed it with varithane water based floor finish been using it for a while with good results.
A bit of a learning curve on application compared to traditional solvent based finishes.

A few pictures of the finished table. The finish was wet sanded with 1500 then compound buffed.

Brian,
I've done some bowties on joints that were perfectly square to each other for contrast and decoration but never on joints that were with a space in between so let me ask what might be a dumb question.
Assuming you cut them on your shopbot,When you drew up your bowties (female hole) did you cut them with the center and outsides pieces clamped together to make sure they would cut correctly and the center of the bowtie would be over the crack (empty space) between boards? If so, HOW?

THAT Really is a stunning and beautiful on of Brian!!!
What show was that? And how was it received by the people?
Are you selling the table now? or just showing it off to see the interest level?
Gorgeous! :)

Jack I clamped the table down at the spacing I wanted and cut the tie pockets I had several files at differnt angles I just eyeballed where they went. Pretty simple.
Thanks for the compliments it is for sale had a lot of interest and the show promoter wants to feature it on their site.
Scott the show was in the ulster county fairgrounds New Paltz NY
http://www.quailhollow.com/ we have had good results at this show its our 5th year I think and its the closest show to home only 40 min away.
Jack this is how I fixtured the top.

Do the bow-ties go clear through?
steve_g

“Do the bow-ties go clear through?”
I’m interested in Brian’s thoughts here also, but thought I’d interject my experience…
The argument for NOT going clear through would include the additional glue surface area the bottom of the hole gives you.
Arguments TO go clear through include that hydraulic pressure developed in a blind hole can actually split the wood! This is not an issue when there is a physical gap like this table. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had potential customers get under a table to see if the bow-tie goes through… when it doesn’t, they assume it’s a veneer thick cosmetic ploy!
My practice is that for large items like tables and benches, I use a blind pocket for any additional strength it might give, but for smaller items like boxes, plaques or desk organizers, a bow-tie clear through is a crowd pleaser!

KL Westfall, No on this one they are 1 1/8 deep I have made some interlocking tables that are through cuts like these in the pictures.
Steve, I have split a few pieces pounding a dowel or key with too much glue in a blind pocket a few times, now I either drill a relief hole on the bottom or groove the insert just shy of the top to let excess escape.
