White oak table

Sorry I am not too active the past while on the forum - been busy, and I often forget to take photos and post. Hard to believe that it is 6 1/2 years since I have incorporated the Shopbot into my shop, and it continues to allow us to manufacture things that we otherwise couldn’t do.

This past spring, we did a large custom kitchen and other cabinetry four a customer. They also wanted to have a large (10’ By 4’) dining table made in quarter cut white oak.

We did some drawings of the proposed base, then cut a sample from poplar to get the OK. The past week I cut the parts for the base columns (23” long, 10” wide and 3 1/2” thick - 4 pcs per column) roughed them out and finish machined them with a 1/2” ballnose bit.

We mitred them on the resale bandsaw set to 45 degrees - and jointed the faces perfectly to mitre the bases together.

This is another job I am very proud of - a true custom piece for a good customer (we did their oak staircase as well, and other closet cabinetry all in maple).

The columns were shaped and sanded today (rounded the corners and so forth) but I forgot to take a photo. WIll do next week. This wood is very dense and heavy... the top will weigh in about 350 pounds. The columns take two hands and a good grip to handle.

I also love white oak, but the quartered stuff up here in Canada is like walnut... CRAZY $$. I ampaying almost $10/board foot for 8/4 rough quartered white oak and about $6.50 for flat sawn. Walnut is up around $12 now for 8/4. (wholesale pricing no less)

I wish I could go back in time about 8 years when I set up the new shop, and buy a few thousand feet of the stuff when it was less than 1/2 what it is now.

Ill show more photos this week I hope. One of my guys is off on holidays, and I have a job out of town for a few days. But I think well get it finished up ready for the spray booth.

I can get 8/4 quarter sawn white oak for $4.83/ bd. ft.
I can also get several exotics for the same price in 4/4 rift sawn.

Prob not. I think its going to be fairly dark. Waiting for stain sample coming from Ethan Allen. The customer bought 12 chairs from them and we are matching the stain. They are slow as molasses sending it to us though.

"customer is always right" isn't always right.
An acquaintance who owns a retail hardwood shop delved into kitchen cabinets for the very first time....the husband LOVED a batch of highly figured Birdseye that he and I went in together for the kilning. Was supposed to be a golden honey stain....at the last minute as he was proudly showing the couple his work just prior to finishing...the wife said
"WE decided to go with an opaque white pickle finish instead :)"
So ended his cabinet career:)
They were UGLY!!!
He now specializes in beautiful wide plank flooring for his sideline :)

Finally getting somewhere.. lol

The finish is 10 degree sheen post cat lacquer - will be pretty flat/matte finish when dry.

Last coats on tomorrow, assembly and delivery slated for Tuesday, as Monday is a stat holiday here.

Deceiving the way the lighting and wood is positioned. The feet, columns and top are all stained the same and placed next to one another look the same.

Will be a straight shot into the front entrance, right into the dining room 🙂
