It's a challenge for those of us using a computer as a design station as opposed to free-hand drawing. There's a world of great letter styles but they can look mechanical unless care is taken. Kerning or letter spacing is one of those critical area's.
Here are a couple examples of DiBond letters recessed in a background. One of the requirements is to keep little hands of the lettering. So far, all is going well.
