I'm having trouble with my machine and I won't be able to complete a sign. If someone is interested in caring a 3D sign in HDU. This is a 2 sided sign approximately 20" x 36". The background of the sign needs to be textured with a wood grain.
I am in western Massachusetts.

Phil,

Nice looking sign. Wish we were closer to assist.
I do have one suggestion, and that is, we would not use HDU. Our favorite is PVC because it's easy to finish and excellent for exterior signs.
You could machine both sides in about six and a half hours.
Let me know if I can help.

Jerry,

1" PVC is $125 a sheet. It's twice the density of 18lb. HDU. We seldom use HDU. No more grit.

1-1/2" thick HDU runs around 400.00 +/- for a 4x8 sheet in my area.

Thanks for the info, Joe does pvc need to me sealed? or just primed before painting, two coats needed?

Jerry,

PVC doesn't need sealing. For your own personal test, throw your scraps outside to and leave them for a few years. You will notice a slight color change to off white. Not enough to color shift to worry about. This material doesn't need priming. You should scuff smooth surfaces with sandpaper. Carved area's are ready with any good exterior paint.C

Proper adhesive is advisable. That would be the "CLEAR PVC" Gorilla glue. I would suggest staying away from plumbing products. Any adhesive with a strong smell should be avoided. Those glue's have a quick flash point and set up too fast. What you want is a slow setup which allows for deep adhesion. With Gorilla PVC you have a few minutes minutes to match up your materials. I'd suggest about five minutes.

Thanks, Joe. I've made many signs out of PVC. They have all been V Carved. The HDU choice was not mine. I haven't carved any signs with 3D graphics. Can you suggest some speed and feed numbers for bits such as 1/8" and 1/4" roundnose bits. I use Beckwith's tapered bits.
