I have a benchtop PRT, approx. 2 1/2 years old. Over that period of time the driver for the X motor has blown 6 times. Since there is only one X motor I was able to switch to the "spare" driver, when that blew I switched to the "aux" driver, when that blew it was repaired by Shopbot under warranty. I've gone through the same scenario with the repaired drivers. Today the last available driver went. I will have to send it in for repairs now.
Why am I blowing the X motor driver and never the Y motor driver? Could the driver blow because I am overtaxing the motor (too heavy a cut)? If that's true why doesn't the Y motor driver go?
With the Control box turned off and the motor cable disconnected I can move the X carriage easily. What could be causing the problem I am having?

Make sure none of your wireing for for the x axis is rubbing on the frame of the machine.
If it is check to see if the insulation has been worn through if it has it is shorting out on the frame.
And that wil give you the intermitent problem.

Grant helped me locate the problem. I didn't have the motor cables secured very well, when the machine moved back and forth the connection was strained pulling on the wires. I've secured all of my cables much better.
