View Full Version : The logic of raster cuts in X versus Y

I was wondering if it makes more sense to cut in Y when cutting 3D as instead of the momentum of the gantry making the cut you have the Y car sliding back & forth on a fairly "stationary" gantry. Does that put undue stress on one motor versus two when you cut in X with two sharing the duty? (can you tell I'm in the shop & I got wireless working down here - I'll never see my family again :-)

me I cut long wise to use x or y depending on the longest leg of the 3d. I think your worrying too much (G)

Well Steve, I dont really worry about the motors as I can replace them, no its more that I thought there would be less vibration at the cutter tip. I'm cutting a 15"x15"x.7" 3D file in Y at the moment to see if it makes any difference. It just seems less "torquey"

Mostly I choose to go with the grain of the wood. There is far less sanding to do.
