Could someone tell me a place that I could buy 1/16th upshear bits, seems like all I can find is straight bits.
Thanks

Richard,
You might try some of the industrial Tool Suppliers, MSC, ENCO, J&L, KBC and others will all have milling bits. Most of these are suitable for wood.
One of the problems will be shank size. Many of the milling bits are 1/8" shank. Also, PC board Mills are 1/8 shank and can be had very small.
Happy cutting
We do hummingbirds that have as many as 29 pieces in each. This means the wing feathers and the beak are quite small to cut. We would like a 1/16th 60 degree round-over bit. We can have it made, but if we could purchase it somwhere, it likely be less money. Can anyone help??

Thanks Ron for the info I figured that shank size would be a problem the 1/16th straight bits that I did find do work but it leaves the groove full of saw dust that is packed in hard, it will come out but it does take a little effort. It does help to run the program twice which will clean out the groove.
Thanks again

Mr. Sears and Shirl,
I have a suggestion. If you can afford the upfront cost, it will save you money in the long run. You can buy solid carbide cutters from places like MSC, ENCO, ect. but solid carbide cutters usually have a shank the exact same size as the cutting diameter. Anyways, these are fairly cheap, but you need a good way of holding these.
To solve this problem, I purchased an ETM brand ER-11M (mini) collet set. It has a half inch shank and the 7 collet have a range of .02" to .275". The set also includes a special wrench for the collet closer. Now, here is where you separate the men from the boys. You have to cut about 2 inches off the collet holder shank. I had to use a cut off saw, as the holder is hardened.
Like I said, it is going to cost you big upfront (think in the range of a new 3.25 Hp Porter Cable router range) but will pay for itself in cutter cost over the long haul.
Oh, J&L's part number for the set I have is ETM-11116H. They also have an ER-16 set for about $100 more in the same shank size, which gives you an even larger holding range.
Just a thought, there are cheaper sets avaiable, but ETM list their runout at .0004" at 2" from the collet. Most cheap imports are more than .001". By having a lot of runout, your bits will wear faster on one edge AND you will ruin your router bearings.

Luthier's Merchantile has some bits of small size offered and a 1/8 to 1/4 split bushing as an adaptor. (lmii.com)
Bruce's suggestion of the collet adapter is an excellent one. Machining the little devils is a PITA.

If you're going to be using 1/16" and under bits alot, you might want to consider getting a high speed air spindle. Otherwise you will be limited to slow feed rates.

Belins, get yer Belins! Hey guys, I thought I would pass this along, but there is a guy auctioning brand new Belin bits on ebay here.

I emailed him, and her will sell in quantity for $9.99 a bit without the auction hassle. His email is nchris@pgtc.net (mailto:nchris@pgtc.net) , and I warned him that he might get a few emails. I bought a bunch of them to try at that price!
Good Morning:
Thanks for the info on the 1/16 bit. We use 1/4" material and each little hummer is only 4"
in size, thus - tiny pieces. We need a 1/16 bit with a 1/4" cut with a round-over. At present we do these on the scroll saw, but can hardly keep up. The CNC should do these faster, or at least help us keep up. Does this sound like anything
you may have used, or had need for? We sure do.
Can really use some help here.. Thanks
Shir.

Shirl,
If you use a 1/4 in. plunge round over you won't need a 1/16 in bit... it will cut through your
1/4 in. material and round over at the same time..
Hi Dan: The 1/4 Dia. bit doesn't give me the detail I require for those little feathers etc.
I really could use a 1/16" Dia bit with a 1/4"
cutting surface and round over as well. With small pieces, we nest things and the 1/4" Dia is
just a bit too big. Do you know where I can get
one? We can have a metal cutting bit made up and they sure stay sharp, but thought we could get it quicker is we purchased one already made.
I also need to know if anyone is a pro at Corel9?
It has all the features to do dxf shopbot files, but I'm just learning it. I need some help! Can
anyone give me a hand????
Thsnks

Shirl,
I don't know where you will get a 1/16 bit with a
1/4 shank, But I detail some pretty small stuff
with the point of a round over bit, it comes to a
very small point shirl..
I was gopint to insert a drawing here, paste doesn't seem to work "help"
shirl, I have some corel video's on my website,
you can check out.. www.burningimpressions.ca/videoclips

Shirl,
Woodline of Arizona (woodbits.com) has 'point cutting round-over bits' that might do what you need.
Texas Carbide made some special profile bits for me a couple of years back $25 for the template then $12 to reshape the bit - I furnished the bits. I think I remember the costs correctly.
Bruce Clark's advise of buying the collet adaptor makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of metal working bits in small sizes. And, it will not take the cost of too many bits being made to pay for collets.

The Porter Cable part number for the 1/8" to 1/4" bushing that allows you to use 1/8" shanked bits in your 1/4" collet is 42106. Less than $10. Should work in any 1/4" collet.

They are usually listed under "end mills" rather than router bits.
