View Full Version : How do I grain designs into sheet aluminum

I am wanting to hand grain designs into 4x8 sheets of .040 milled finish aluminum.
4901 see image. I believe either a sander or grinder is used.

Why don't you just buy it from Chemetal?

Because at about $400 per sheet that is out of my price range.

I did it awhile ago. not too hard to do. I did alot of expertimenting and got the best results with a skotchbrite pad that fit on an arbor. I got mine at Harbor Freight but they are available from most of the online abrasives dealers as well as McMaster, MSC and Graingers
They are listed in the McMaster website as Nylon Mesh Abrasive Quick-Change Discs

you use a 3m roloc disk on a die grinder. You can get different grit abrasive pads and they will leave the pattern you are looking for. They have a mandrel that fits in a die grinder and they are easily chaged with a twist.
