V bit stepover for reliefs

I have a little project that the lines are too fine to cut with a ball nose and so am using a 60 degree vee bit. .002 and .004 cutting raster against the grain gives me a pretty clean finish but I'd like to max out my stepover to diminish cutting time. Any suggestions based on personal experience?

hog out with a larger bit so you can do your finishing pass at a higher feed rate?
