Personally I perfer using plastic toilet seat bolts found at any hardware store.I figure if it holds my fat butt it will hold down just about anything.

We have at least 3 stockists (Cape Plastics, Bolt & Nut Centre, Topfast), but I don't think you want to buy them from Cape Town, South Africa. Where are you? Have you asked at your local stores that stock industrial fasteners?

In the UK they sell nylon bolts and nuts to hold number plates on cars.

Simon, the number plate screws sold here are of some plastic that is much weaker than nylon. I suspect the the toilet seat screws may also not be of industrial grade nylon.

As much as I dislike using screws for hold-downs, they remain appropriate for some jobs, especially where none-too-flat wood is supplied by the customer.
Based on a scale-of-hardness approach, brass screws remain the best option so far(?), given that brass is a good deal softer than hardened-steel router bits and/or solid carbide.
But yes, a true plastic screw would be a definite God-send..

www.plasticnutsandbolts.com (http://www.plasticnutsandbolts.com/) could be useful for some ShopBotters

If you can afford it there are plastic nails by Raptor that can be shot with one of their air nailers.
