I want to cut .710 depth. I want to use 2 passes.
First pass to cut .680 or so. 2nd pass to cut through.
Part works always cuts 1/2 way through no matter what I set depth per pass at.
Is there something I am missing?
Thanks,,,,David

I believe you have to do 2 seperate toolpaths, 1 at 0 to .680 and then another down to .710.

David,
Terry is correct, its just how Partworks does it. However, after you calculate both toolpaths you can save both to one file as you save to disk using your postp.

Actually you have full control of the pass depth in partworks. You simply edit the tool parameters for the toolpath. In this case set the pass depth to .68 and the cut depth to .71. partworks with then take 2 passes like you describe.

Fellas, don't you have to set max tool cut depth, in the tool database, to .681 then set the cut depth to .710.
I think that will do exactly what you want to do.

You type too fast Chris.

I think if you guys run a little test file with the stated depths you will find that PartWorks will shift to a single path at 0.71" depth.
Terry's way is the only way to maintain exact control for each pass depth.

Interesting... you are absoulutly right Tim.
I just tried it and got your results.
I guess Ive always used the depth of pass to control how many passes were made as opposed to trying to get one deep and one shallow pass.
now comes the conundrum... why?
and somehow it kind of diturbs me that PW is overriding my max pass depth setting on it's own.

the software just divides the cut depth by the depth of cut.
it's best to do two tooplaths with a depth of cut deep enough for both. so say set the tool for a .75 depth cut the first pass is .68 then I copy the tool path change the depth. I usually have a offset on the first pass too.

Chris...
PWks is not overriding your max pass depth. Since it reads that the max is less than the full depth, it calculates the minimum passes required to meet both conditions. In your case it would be 2. Total depth divided by 2 = each pass depth.
What is needed in this case would be a minumum pass depth to force a deeper cut, or just toolpath as Terry (and the rest of us) shows above.

You can also use the Z proportion multiplier right before you excute the part file to adjust the cutting depth.
It will work for smaller adjustments, say your cut depth is at .2 insert a 3 multiplier and it becomes .6
Your Z home position will also multiply and will return to say 0,0,3
