I am looking at buying a desktop Bot to cut thru 1/8" thick aluminum. I would like to know if anyone is doing this and if so what kind of spindle are you using.

Hello
We have made simple molds with 1/2 alum using a spiral uplift bit wiht no problems. cuts well at various speeds and slower speeds.

Hey Mike,
Are you using one of the Porter Cable or Makita routers? Or are you using the Colombo?
Thanks for you response,
Brad

I’m no expert but this is what I did with great results.
I had to machine cutouts in 1 ¾ sq. aluminum t-slot extrusion (like the 80-20 stuff).
This was for a prototype only. I did not refine my settings because we sent the production quantities out for machining.
I have a P.C. router on my bot. And used these settings:
3/8 spiral up carbide router bit
WD-40 to lubricate every other pass
0.05” per pass
Move speed of 0.15 X and Y 0.05 on the Z
10,000 rpm (slowest setting on the router)

We are using the Porter Cable. I would still like to slow the rpm's down but with router won't work with the electronic speed controlls we use with our Makita Routers in our router boxes. But like I said it cut well at various speeds and feed rates.
