I have searched the local super electronics store for a long, "shielded" serial cable, and cant even find one that is shielded, let alone a big one. Do I have to go to an industrial computer type place?

Serial cables (assuming RS-232) are available in many configurations. You may need to have the cable custom made. A good tutorial can be found at www.arcelect.com/rs232.htm (http://www.arcelect.com/rs232.htm).

If you build your own cable, connect the shield at one device only, otherwise you'll face ground-loop problems, thus defeating the reason for using a shielded cable.
