Is the Gold paint typically used in V-carved something special? What is it and where might I get it locally?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,

Traditionally V letters are gilded. I bet that's what you've seen. It comes in leaf form and is applied to a size-varnish.

I haven't seen any paint that gives the sheen or color as gold. With this type of letter you are looking for high reflectivity which shows the facits of the carving.

Wish there was a good reflective gold paint.

Hey, if paint could do the job of real gold, then this country will go out of business!

What about the diamonds?

Diamonds are mostly from Botswana, Namibia and Angola these days (but the industry is controlled from here). Anyway, gold is no longer the big earner for us - it has been overtaken by platinum. And mining has been overtaken by general industry. But there is still something nostalgic (glamorous) about the gold mines.

You asked about paint, one shot is the best for paint, that I have found.
The best is gold leaf it is an art but not that hard to learn, it depends on the sign and price.

Is the 1 shot metallic brass a better looking finish than imitation gold?

The 1 shot imitation gold is not a metallic color - it is a yellowish looking paint. If you want a metallic gold paint, you need to get the metallic gold lettering enamel.
If you want a really nice water based latex metallic gold, (for interior use only though) try BEHR Premium Plus Metallic No. 741, 14 carat color.

Mayo,

Very interesting about the BEHR gold product. I wonder why this is considered interior. Could you topcoat it with a clear for exterior use?

Joe

Not sure about using a clearcoat over the BEHR. Perhaps with a water based clear...

One problem could be that it dries to the touch in one hour, can be recoated in 4 hours - but "After 4 weeks, surface is fully cured"

The printing on their 31 oz. container is so small you practically need a microscope to read it. Additional info may be available at www.behr.com (http://www.behr.com)

Use Ronan "Real Gold". It's waterbased and looks the closest I've seen! 1-shot will tarnish and look blah real quick. I usually undercoat with a bright yellow first.
