I'm building a sign with 6" square posts and was searching the web for ball finials. I wanted something large (maybe 4.5-5" high) that wouldn't look lost on the top of a 6" post with a 7" cap.
The larger sizes are hard to find so I contacted Osbornewood.com after doing a Google search. I'd rather they just told me they weren't interested, instead they sent me back an estimate of $110 ea in pine Considering they sell their 2.5" for less than $7 I think that's thievery.
So, does anyone know a supplier who sells finials in larger sizes?

Robert..
Try Wood Craft http://www.craftparts.com/Index.htm
They have finials (smaller) and balls up to 5", you may have to make a base to turn the ball into a finial, but they are under $20.

Typically the largest commercially made is more suited for a 4 x 4 post outdoors. Van Dyke's has some available. The largest they have are the Pineapples.

Perhaps a botter with an indexer will chime in here.

homedepot.com has a nice selection of 4x4 and 6x6 post cap finials at reasonable prices.

Here is a photo of a church sign I just made and installed using 6x6 powder coated pewter finish ball post cap finials I got within 5 days of ordering at $72.09 for the pair including shipping.

Robert,

Don't mean to vent but I'm trying to justify the prices I should charge for things like this. I know 110 sounds like a lot of money but try setting this up in CAD/CAM for a one shot item then buying material and finally machine time and operator time to cut it. Not to mention bits, electricity, glue ups, etc., etc. Why do I even try

Anyway, here's a link from a catalogue I received awhile back that might have what you need for a little less.

Here's a bigger photo of one of the 6x6 finials I bought through homedepot.com

The materials and workmanship are quite good and you can't beat the price.

I've used Boston Turning Works for large redwood finials. They also have them in several other woods, and lots of various styles.

I do custom woodturning. I'll do finials. I use a copy lathe(a Botter could provide the template).
