Finishing Plex Edges

We are finishing two plexiglass panels 48"X57" from 3/4" plexiglass. After beveling the edges at a 45 degree down .50" and started finishing the sides.

I had planned on using a tourch to glaze the sides but after several failed attempts we optioned for our trusty DA. Sure enough, with the grit, from p100 down to p1500 the edges were smooth. This was still not the clear polish I wanted, so out came the tourch again. No luck.

My auto body friend came by with his buffer and some compound and quickly the edges looked liquid clear.

I would like to know if anyone has experience with this process.

These panels are extremely heavy. About 125lb each. I hadn't planned on this as I have no idea how to attach them to the interior walls of the shopping mall.

I had to do the same thing on this project:

I first cut the pieces...flame polishing didn't work well at all. 1/4" stock it worked beautifully, but not the 3/4" stuff for some reason. Anyway, use the orbital sander with 150 grit to get the saw marks/bit marks off. Then 220...then 320...then wet sand with 400, 600 and stop. Use plastic polish that you get from the plastic supply. Buff with #3 polish, then #2 polish using 6" or 10" buffer. Looks great after you take the paper off of the plex.

Maguire's 'instant detailer' is a very nice polish/anti static spray for use on plastic. You can get it at any auto store.

I added some more pictures on the site www.unofutura.com (http://www.unofutura.com) of the table set and a bench and bookcase.

The bench and bookcase are made of steel and square holes were cut using the SB plasma cutter. The bench is Sculpt Nuvous' Silver and the bookcase is Brass.
