Time for first replacement of spoilboard. I decided that I was going to try and pull through a piece of mdf. My old spoil board was drilled for vacuum.

Has anyone had trouble with MDF lifting and cupping when trying to cut .010 off. I got about 10 passes around board and it started digging in on corners. MDF was sitting on freshly sufaced and sealed plenum. I had my vacuum on, but did not seem to matter all 4 corners were lifting.

I stopped and counter sunk some holes and screwed mdf down to plenum on the corners and started cutting again, this time taking about .125 to level previous screwup. This time it got about 1/2 way finished when I heard bot working hard again and found that now the center of the mdf had lifted and I could see a gap between the plenum and the mdf in the middle. This is just the first side and I had not flipped it yet. Now it would take about 3/8" to level board... not worth it, time to start over.

This mdf has been in my shop for a year on rack, should be acclimated. This is my first spoil board replacement since setting up bot 4 years ago.

Today I am going to try to find some Tupan, but I have never seen it. only heard discussions of it here, probably less chance of finding any on Saturday. So I will probably have to get another piece of mdf.

Has this happened to others or was it just not my day?

that's typical mdf will start to pull up soon. flattening from the outside in will help this out. once you flip it and do the other side it will be ok. I was doing texturing on mdf a couple of 3'x2' places and the end pulled up and vacuum would not hold it. part of that is the vacuum does not hold mdf well once the surface is off.

I was not able to find any Trupan, so I got another sheet of mdf from bigbox store. No problems on new sheet, machined just fine and laid nice and flat all the while.
