I had a dxf of a toybox/blanketchest that had a boxjoint type of fit together and i lost it in a hard drive crash and i have tried to recreate the file but my joints don't seem to come out right to the point where they fit together correctly.
When i take a section and try to duplicate it and stack it on top to continue the pattern that is where i am having a problem because trying to join them throws the fit off a bit from the female part and the opposing male part.
Does anyone have a toybox dxf with a similar joint depicted here?
Or can you advise me on how to continue a pattern and make it symetrical and join it so regardless of how long you make it, it will fit along with the opposing side?

What you are looking for is a dog-boned box joint. You could create it in the dxf by writing your own autocad script, or create a toolpath that has dog-bone corners. Unfortunately the only way I know of to get an SBP file from a cad program that has dog bones is to add it to the DXF like you are wanting to do.
Why don't standard toolpath generators offer this option? (I have put it in mine) It is such a common thing to need.

Jack,
If I follow you right, if you split your design at the middle of the flats instead, then you can join them end to end (vertex to vertex).

I think I may have a solution to Jack's problem which I just did in CorelDraw X3, but I have a question. I'm assuming that the joints for one side are cut on the edge of the stock, and those for the other are cut on the face of the matching piece, like in a dovetail jig. Is this correct?

I am trying to make a small gun cabinet and making this joint for the joining pieces say just like a bookcase. The problem i have is regardless of where i intersect the copies to extend the pattern, it is off by enough to make the joint not fit, especially when i try to make the female part that locks into it.
I was trying to figure a "precise" way to stack these joints on top of each other along with the opposing part so it would fit correctly. And yes George, the pattern will be cut into the edges of the material...thank you..

We model such a joint in Alibre Design using the Linear Pattern tool.
But then we model the entire cabinet with the joinery, and the resultant DXF file outputs the length of joint we require. We also include a "Clearance_Width" if required to adjust the fit of the joint.

What program are you using the dxf file in? If you can explain exactly the shape of the joint I can draw it for you accurately. Sketch it by hand with exact measurements written in and fax or e-mail it to me.

If it's ok with him, it's fine with me...I haven't got anything yet but keep in mind it will be a specific height and size. Don't know if that will work for you or not. I have a "section" of the dogbone boxjoint that i will send you if that will help.

Jack, are you overhanging one part over the edge of your bot like in a dovetail jig, or are both adjoining parts flat on the table? Send me that sketch you sent David.
