Greetings to all,

We had some people complaining they didn't get the free models we sent out every month, there were some technical glitches with the mail server so we decided to resend the last newsletter of a few days ago again to give more people the opportunity to try out our free promotional models.

So if you haven't registered yet take a moment to open a free user account on our website to get notified of the free models when we resend our last mailshot in the next few days.

We are giving away 6 free models for all to try. All models are scanned at high res so you should be able to scaleup considerably and still get a good detail.

The whole website seems a little hard to use. If I have to register to use it, that fact could be better defined. It is non-responsive on several computers... I'll keep trying.

There's definately some neat stuff listed on there...but the thing that stands out to me is that the models shown are clay models - NOT what the models look like in software. From the standpoint of someone who does high definition laser scanning, there are a lot of variations in the quality of your 'typical' laser scanner - most wash out or drop out when scanning certain model details. So if I had one piece of advice to give Tom, it would be to show actual previews of the digital version of what a customer will be buying - NOT the clay model that was scuplted by hand. http://www.vectorart3d.com/ has done a good job of showing you exactly what you will be getting before you buy it.

I must admit the site has been very sluggish the last 2-3 days as we got a lot of traffic.

Michael, the link to the 6free models will be sent out over the weekend. There are a few free models however accessible when you log in, on the left of the page there is a user menu with a link to access them.

Brady, you are right about having the photos of the models in software and we will be adding photos of them from top and angled view.

I registered tonight and emailed regarding an issue I experienced in the process. Got an answer back in 30 minutes. Emailed back and got another reply very shortly, again from Greg. He explained that directions to download the free files will arrive with the newsletter to be sent out soon. I guess we wait and see. Personally, I'm not ready to make any negative assumptions yet.

Like Brady, I'm interested to see the quality of the actual files. The clay images look impressive.

Yes, as Jason stated it is Maxon's Cinema 4D, but any 3d rendering package should work well including the open source ones.

I had a number of people asking for help how to open the STL files in ShopBot PartWorks. I am not familiar with it so I hope I can get some help here.

I am sure this must be an old topic but I couldn't find any related threads on the forums and was searching for a while.

Could someone please send some simple instructions on how you imported them or if possible send a link to related thread.

They open like normal in Partworks 3D but, Just regular Partworks doesn't even recognize them, I guess they would have to be converted to a file that PartWorks recognizes and then opened that way.

Greg PaartWorks only recognizes the following file types for the import feature:

*.dxf *.eps *.ai *.pdf *.pvc *.v3m *.v3d

Hope that helps you come up with a solution .

I appreaciate the feedback, they say they use Partworks 3D but have no luck.

By v3d you mean Vectric's Cut3D v3d format?

If yes I may just send them v3d files instead to sort it out.

That's the one Greg it's just a cut down version of Cut3D.

I just opened it real quick didnt try to manipulate it or anything. Figured if it opened I could do the rest.

Also, I have the newest version since I just got my machine a couple of days ago, that may be the difference too.

ONe other thing Greg they won't open in Aspire either. Which is PArtWorks with about 10-15 3D modeling tools add to it.

If you are having problems loading these you could also convert them to OBJ or DXF through a free open source application that handles this scanned data very well. http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/

The files load fine into Cut3D/PartWorks3D and also Aspire (for Aspire use File - Import - Component / 3D Model).

You can't load them directly into VCarve Pro/PartWorks because these programs don't load 3D files directly. You can load the files into PartWorks3D, create toolpaths and save as a V3D file which can then be imported into PartWorks to do layout etc.

There is a tutorial on using Cut3D / PartWorks 3D files in VCarve Pro on the support page at

That works. I was just experimenting for Greg cause he posted further up about other people having issues with opening these filez.

Thanks for the Aspire tip though I was just trying to do the open file command. Which works fine for PW3D.

Well I don't know about you guys but when I resize there models I loose a lot of definition or detail.
This had been imported into aspire.

That file is huge it opens in PW3D as being 82"x81"x12.75" approximately cause Im not looking right at at the moment.

Angus, somehow your software doesn't detect the exact size correctly, it assumes it is in iches, in fact the dimensions you get are in mm.

The finishing toolpath by the way was done with a 1mm ball nose tool.

I purchased from these guys last year. Price was a little high and I did not realize that they were not rendered pictures and just clay models.

After I downloaded my purchase and rendered it I felt ripped off.

In order for a business to succeed both parties need to walk away with a feeling of gain and I did not feel that way.

Soo in short if I cant see a rendering beforehand it is a waste of my $$.

The clay model is a good selling point, but you need to add a rendered picture as well or you are simply doing the old bait and switch.

"felt ripped off" did you communicate that back to the seller and what was their reply.

I'll have to dig up the 3d file's I bought. I bought two last year around this time when 3dmodel club first came around.

There just was not much detail. It looked like it was scanned with one of those camera setups.

Yes I told them and there is a thread on it if you dig back to last year. Their reply was that it looks better in clay lol.

They were simply all washed out. They have alot of really nice models, I think that the problem is the scanner they are using.

I see I had also posted then about loosing detail when sizeing and things have still not changed.

I cut the flying eagle in 3 inch mahogany 12" x 20" and keeping the full depth of cut you only have .25 inch left on the bottom. I could have changed the Z depth but I chose not to. I had a problem I did not think of as the depth from the beak to the bottom of the wing was so great that the collet nut bottomed out on the eagle head and milled it completely off. I continued the cut to see if it is worthwhile to cut again and I feel quality is very good. But in order to cut full depth I would need a longer .25" ballnose bit. I checked the availibility of the bit and found few available. I called Fred at Centurion and discussed the availabilty as I could not find a 4" by .25" Ballnose bit on his website. He said they don't make one but he checked if he had the stock at 4 inches long, he did have it so he made me the bits. It took 3 days from phone call to having the bits in my hand. This is one great company that understands customer service. Thank you Jack Jarvis for mentioning Centurion over and over.

I didn't want to order on line so I didn't place an order with him. May be that is the way he does business but I like dealing with people the first time or when I have questions.
