Hmmmmm,
Looks like another one of those copyrighted images to me. Maybe you (or anyone...)can get away with pirating someone else's material every once in awhile, but it would seem to me that soliciting such material on a public Forum is asking for trouble...

I don't have an image for you,
but,as to copyrights,
you can copy any that you want, for your private use on private property without legal problems,
what you can't do is display in a public place.
[your truck,boat,the mall etc]
or for sale without permission,

Carl

Let me start out by saying that I’m neither a lawyer nor speak in any way for ShopBot Tools, so take this for what it’s worth.

What we’re really talking about is the concept of “Fair use”...what you can legally do with copyrighted material. There’s a good article on wikipedia about it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use , but the Readers Digest version is that it’s so complicated that you can never be sure if your use of copyrighted material is legal! Generally, though, a direct copy of a copyrighted work doesn't seem to be a legal fair use. That doesn’t mean that the copyright police will knock down your door if you make a copy of a copyrighted piece for use in your own home, but just because you can get away with something doesn’t mean that it’s legal to do. It would be the same as saying that your friend really likes a particular song and asking if someone had the mp3 that they could put on their IPod …you probably wouldn't get in trouble for possessing it but that doesn't mean it's not illegal.

It’s a different matter however if you are supplying or hosting material. While the RIAA isn’t generally going after people that download copyrighted music, they do go after people that supply or host it. Asking for something that’s copyrighted and hosting the file on a server so that it can be downloaded by others are 2 different things entirely…the later can get you a whopper fine. It might not ever happen, but the potential is there. A private transaction is one thing, but my feeling is that ShopBot shouldn’t ever give the appearance of being involved in something that could potentially be illegal...even the perception that the ShopBot forum is involved in something illegal can be damaging.

This doesn’t mean that I think that ShopBot shouldn’t be involved in distributing files at all. That’s the reason that we’re working on the Project Wizard system…so that there’s a way for designers and creative folks to distribute part files for projects that they own the copyright for. Under US law, copyright is automatic and not something you have to do...if you create something that’s copyright-able then that work is copyrighted automatically. You have to actively “un-copyright” it by spelling out what other people can do with it...maybe with a "Creative Commons" license http://creativecommons.org/... if you want other people to be free to use it. So unless you either created the thing yourself or know the copyright holder and know for sure that they have explicitly given permission to use it, you have to assume that it is copyrighted and that your uses of it are restricted.

Another good source of info on this complicated issue is Brad Templeton’s article “10 Big Myths about copyright explained” at http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html

Thanks Doc, I appreciate your R.D. version....
I have read and re-read the actual verbage set forth by the copyright police and I agree, it is so much double-talk!
Great links, too.
Thanks!
