View Full Version : Air Filtration system
What's everybody using for air filtration? I don't know why I never got one but I think it's time. Since I have the shopbot in the garage and now moving to a different neighborhood, a area where I can't exactly have the garage open anymore or side door. I don't exactly wanna be in a closed room with dust floating all around.
I thought about the JDS 750-Er or the Delta 50-875 both with remotes. I was wondering is anyone has these models or something better. My garage is approx 20x20

Built my own several years ago when I had the central A/C replaced. Used the squirrel-cage fan out of the central unit, built a box to hold it and three 20x20 filters. Placed two standard filters and a HEPA filter on the input side. When the first filter gets dirty the second gets rotated to first position and a clean filter goes into position #2. Also, wired the blower for two speeds. Works great in an area slightly larger than your garage.
Only change I would make is to add a timer so that it would continue to run for about an hour after I leave the "studio".
The best way to keep your air clear is to pick up the dust at the source. A good dust collection system with high filtration is your best bet.

I agree with Evan, I installed a 3HP Oneida Air this January. I was running small dust collectors with bags. I had a portable delta unit, doesn't do much in a 30x40 shop. Then I installed a central air system with filter boxes on the intakes. It worked better but it would take 15 or 20 minutes to clear the air after the equipment was shut down.
The Oneida Air 3HP Super Dust Gorilla exchanges the air in the shop about every 5 to 10 minutes. It stays clean and if the air gets dirty it'll knock out the "fog" in a couple of minutes with the 2 blast gates open.
It really sucks. During installation I lost a screwdriver and had to go fish it out of the barrel. A curious cat and an open blast gate do not mix, fortunately the cat was slightly too large :-) I don't think she'll ever set foot in the shop again.

I got a smallish dust filter from Penn State, with remote control, five speeds, programmable duration. All very inexpensive.
And in my opinion, even with dust collection, it makes a noticeable difference to be running the filter.

I agree with Arthur. A combination is best.
I ordered the JDS 750-er I wanna get all all the fine dust, a good air filtrations system will compliment the DC.
Not bad, Woodcraft.com has them for $299

I recently purchased a 2hp dust collector and a hanging airfilter with remote from Grizzly. I had to do extensive repairs to the hanging airfilter as the squirrel cage fan was welded out of balance. But after getting a new fan and a couple hours of work repairing the system - it works great. I have very little dust in the air.
