I do enough engraving on these anodized aluminum plates and I have used a 60 degree engraving bit. but it's hard to get even lettering as sometimes the plates are a bit off and it is almost impossible to have a jig accurate enough to setup several and get the same looking and depth of engraving on all of them. Now I need to make smaller letters so I think a diamond drag would be good. and one of the spring holders seems the way to go to help with the different levels.

a link, but no recommendation. I've never used one, but I had this linked in case I ever wanted to try this.

They also make a spring loaded tool that will chuck into a router to go with it.

Thanks John for posting the link, that is exactly the type of bit I've been searching for. Russ

This is also the adaptor that would work for engine turning (with a stiff spring) or, with a pen, to turn the Bot into a plotter. The cost is a bit steep for me @ $345. My have to build my own

I thought of that too but I can't build my own. my customer is paying 1/2 the cost.

Google "spring loaded scribe", the 4th listing is a book entitled "Machine Shop Trade Secrets", and page 206 has this photo. Looks like a homemade one. This looks pretty easy to make with a lathe and drill press. Could use thread-all rod and heavy nuts for internal threads, make it so it can be disassembled to change to different stiffness springs. Also, the spring preload could be adjustable. My Ace Hardware store has an assortment of Century brand springs. Could use replaceable carbide or diamond pointed scribe refills from McMaster. Please post your design if you make one.
