The slay came from a fretwork pattern I had I just scaned it and use coral draw to turn to vectors.

Any one using the cut files in the art. files. I cut into my spoil board. do air cut first to be shure nothing go scrambled on the net. And the dear files use all the table so pic your hold points carfuly. I use drywall screw's and plan them out on the drawing's. one other thing I do is use a sheet of luan on my spoil board so I dont have to reserface all the time.

Just to add for every one I use !/2" cdx. You get 2 dear 1 up and 1 down per sheet. 1 side of slay per sheet. santa uses less then a sheet the rest I use for slay bottem and ends cut on table saw.

I use a 1/4" 2 flut straight bit and use 3 passes at 2.00 Ips. But feal free to add tabs or cut in any maner that meets your needs.

You may have started the greatest Idea for shopbotters and that's sharing files like the christmas file and posting for download. This is often done by leatherworkers and sharing patterns is great. I have told every one that I sent the slay files to that thay are rugh you may want to smooth them out to your liking. And if you want to scale the dear's you need to change the slide slots to fit the size plywood you are going to use. Other then that I hope you all have fun and make your yards look nice this season. Post some pic's so I can see your work. some where on this computer I have assembly drawings if I ever find them I'l post them.

To make the slay I used drywall scruews and scrap pine strips. As far as width I dont rember I used the scrap from the santa to make 3 peices one big for bottem and 2 narrow strips for the front and back. and placed them where thay did not show. I sat santa on a milk crate.and scruewed him down . he ceppt blowing off. I also used rebar and welled on washers to make stakes and scruewed to the dear's legs to stop them from blowing over.

If you plan to cut at 1/4" a sec and 30 passes figure all day . if you plan to cut 2" a sec. in one pass not long at all 20-30 min. In other words it up to you.

Hey folks,

I have, I think, taken Ed's great sliegh up a notch.
We plan on selling this series this holiday season to help raise money for our group, and I have just finished redesigning the sleigh so it takes no screws or nails for assembly. I have borrowed the idea from Bill Young's workstation available on the ShopBot website. I will post pictures of the sleigh and deer early this week or may be later today and have files ready for posting as early as monday.

By the way what is with the huge jump inprice of exterior grade plywood????? Ouch!

Hey Dale,

Don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard from a couple of plywood companies that I deal with that the price jump was caused by the US government buying an incredible quantity of exterior plywood and OSB in the spring to send to Iraq, thus creating a shortage. Fortunately for me it doesn't seem to have affected marine ply prices, but it's really hurting builders and contractors that bid jobs before the price jump.

I have heard similar rumblings, and you're right it seems to be only in exterior building sheet goods. Cabinet grade material seems untouched as well.
I used to buy 5/8's Exterior grade plywood for $24.00 /sheet, it is now from $38 -$41 /sheet canadian $$'s.

I cut out one of the deer, from scrap I had. 1/4"

I did it quit and didn't notice that part wizard didn't pick up all the slot depths, cut a little short. But, my family got the just of it. He sits a little lop-sided. But, I like the deer, they are pretty neat. I've got a piece of 3/4. Might adjust the file to cut for that. The miniture deer is pretty neat! Thanks!

How are you guys holding them together, just friction fit?

We have to date sold 64 deer and 6 Slieghs, with all profits ($2000 net)going to support our non-profit program.
This helped our shop out immensley this month and kept all our participants busy sanding and packaging.

I tried cutting the reindeer files from the SB files. I'm having a problem with the joinery, on some parts the slots are huge and others they are to small. I'm using a .25 bit and cutting outside vectors. I opend up the Corel file and the slots are different sizes. Anyone else notice this? Or am I doing something wrong?
Also how many passes are you guys taking on material?

I tried cutting the reindeer files. Some of the connecting slots were different sizes some over sized and some undersized. I opened up the corel file and noticed that the slot openings were different. Anyone else have this problem?

John, I opened up the files to see if I could see any thing, Looking at them it appears that a tracing program has converted them to a dxf file.
You will need to go in and smooth out the lines and curves a little and correct the joints to the correct wide for or sheet material. After I did that they cut fine for me. Bryan

Well thats what I'm looking at doing now, the first set were dissapointing. Lots of bandsawing and gluing wedges in. Oh well, the don't have to be all that sturdy.

I'm not sure about this as I have never tried the files or program. I will state plywood varies in thickness quite a bit and I would never expect someone else, in a different part of the country, with a different machine, with different bit and panel suppliers, to be able to create a good, tight fitting set of parts files without any input.

The files have been supplied at no cost. The next post I expect for folks to ask for a free unit of plywood - their specification of course, and complain about delivery or thickness!

A few times folks have brought in material and stated. "It's (insert Imperial number here)" and I woudl reply, "No, it's (true Imperial as shown by measure or Metric). While true dimension doesn't make much difference to the common carpenter who has a pencil line that might measure 0.050", for one running a CNC machine, it can be far too much to make things fit.

Many files need rework just because the material supplier changes and each meachine I have built or worked on is just a little different.
