Life is sweet. Past week full of job, next week too, but today I've been completely free, only doing things I find pleasure in. Some scripting, good eating, working in the yard, idle chatter with neighbours and playing with dog, what more could a man wish for as he sits down anticipating a fine dinner, with better wine, to crown a royal day?

Right, computer icons, obviously. The default shopbot ones are a bit dreary, I think.

I whipped up some versions I think are at least a gradual improvement over the existing set, and without further ado, here they are, side-by-sided with the current set;

and for the less keen eye;

Someone more well versed in the art of design and especially making very small designs stand out could no doubt do much, much better, but this is the fruit of my own little lazy saturday joy. Take it for what it is.

Thanks.

If anyone wants them, to use or to enhance, here you go

3diconszip
3dstyleicons.zip (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/312/3dstyleicons-20949.zip) (42.6 k)

I also did a more xp-ish style icon, the zip file for that one;

xpicons-zip
xpstyleicon.zip (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/312/xpstyleicon-20951.zip) (20.9 k)

Enjoy.

And this is what the xp-style icon looks like.

Alright, I got an email about how to make these icons actually show up in windows xp (if you're running some other version of windows, turn to google... sorry)

So, here's one version of how to do it.

Create a new folder where your icon files will reside, if you don't have one already. IMPORTANT! This is AFAIK, but this folder needs to stay put, since XP will lose track of the icons otherwise. If you move it or delete it, you'll be greeted with generic icons.

Download the zip files into this folder.

Extract the zip files. You should now have three icon files: icon-pw3.ico ; icon-sbp.ico ; newicon.ico in this folder.

In the window you have open, click on the menu called "Tools".

Select "Folder options" from this menu. A new window opens.

In this window, locate the tab called "File Types" in the upper area of the window. Click it, and that tab is opened (this might take a while).

In the list, scroll all the way down to the line saying "SBP ShopBot Part File". Click on it so that it is selected.

Now locate the button in this window that says "Advanced". Click on it. A new window opens.

In this window, click the button that says "Change Icon". A new window opens.

In this window, click the button that says "Browse". A file browser dialog opens.

In this dialog, find your way to the folder where you put the icons you downloaded and extracted.

Once you are in that folder, click on the icon file you want to use for all your .sbp files, to select it. I would suggest the file called "icon-sbp.ico", or "newicon.ico". Click the button that says "Open". The dialog closes.

You're done, now you just have to click "OK" twice, and then "Close", to get back to where you were. All your sbp file icons have been changed to the icon you selected.

You can use the steps above to assign one of the icons to another file type.

The icon file named "icon-pw3.ico", intended to go with the Partwizard 3 program, is included for those that might want to enhance it. AFAIK actually exchanging the icon of the program is not something one should undertake, since it is bundled in the .exe file itself.

NOTE 1: I have .png files for every icon size used in these files, if you want to make them better than they are now just email me and I'll send them to you. I can also send the dxf's of the 3D renderings used for the shopbot machine and the "shopbot machining logo", but you'll have to promise not to laugh...

NOTE 2: These icons are not by any means complete. All sizes are not included, and the alpha channel data and blending options are haphazard, at best. Also, they do not follow the Microsoft design guides fully, though some elements of those guidelines have been included (e.g the drop shadow in the newicon.ico set follows the guidleines, except for the 16x16 version which is too small.) This is very much a work in progress that I hope someone able to design much better than me maybe would like to consider and perhaps even use for a full set.

I think that's about it for now. Happy viewing.
