What version shopbot do I have?

On the control board is reads version 3.51

What software do I use to run this? I'd been running dos software (not sure what version) and now have upgraded the computer to a system running XP. I'me having trouble getting it to connect to the com port so perhaps I'm running incorrect software?

It's a PRT.

Change your comm port, to 2 and try it again?

Are you running the DOS software? Windows XP does not have a true DOS operating system so it will not give support over to the serial port. With the PRT you can use the Windows control software to run the tool.
