I have two computers in my shop, one for the shopbot and one for the office. I connect the two with a dsl cable and has always worked. Yesterday I tried running a file it said that access was denied and did not have permission to access the file. I have not changed anything on the computers. How to do fix this so I can get access?

Do you have any virus protection software running between the two?

McAfee will do auto updates, and it's possible it reset something in the network manager...

I do not have any virus protection on the shopbot computer and have Mcafee on the office one. I will try to find something in the network manager.

What operating system? Is it only that one file, or any you attempt to access - in that folder, or the entire office computer?

I'm using windows xp pro. I can't access any shared files. Also in the error message to contact server to get access. I am able to use a flash drive to get the job completed. Don't you just love computer dumb people.

ty rebooting. if that does not work you need to check network settings. the router could be bad too.

as simple as it sounds turn the router off, wait about 30sec, and then back on. It will reset all network connections. I find I need to do this every couple of weeks to keep my system working.

I've tried rebooting computers and router and still get message contact administrator of server for permission to access server. I have internet connection on the bot computer.

Since this used to work, I doubt that the file permissions have changed, but routers can and do loose their setup. I'd try logging into the router and checking the settings.

Have you tried to go into "MY COMPUTER" --> Right click on the drive letter --> A small window pops up and then click SHARING and SECURITY...then allow the access?

How about unplugging your internet connection so you don't expose yourself to a virus, and completely shut off your anti virus software...BTW I got full versions of McAfee and promptly threw them out. I use Avast free...

Bruce, Go to the computer you are trying access and open my conputer and right click on the drive you are after. Pick the sharing tab and see if it is shared. if not check that box and make sure you are sharing it with everyone.

Bruce

I am assuming that you have set your machines up independently and do not have a common loging setup such as active directory.

The problem probably is that when you log into once of the machines as username=bruce, there is a userid defined for you say 27.. on the oher machine username=bruce as a userid set to something else,.

I has been years since I have done any of this but I beleive that you can go into each machine and set a common userid for each machine...

The other model is to make your files public access by "everyone",,,(hence any user on either machine.

All this is done through COntrol Panel -> user accounts. You could try to set yot username as an administrator or as a "standard user" which is a superuser

Problem solved. I have webroot software on my office computer and when I shut it down and tried it it worked. Then I turned it back on it still worked. I'm getting to old for this kind of stuff. Thanks for all the help, Bruce
