Boats built by ‘Bots?

You will see another posting on the Forum tonight as I list the Camp Shopbot Fall 2007 schedule. One of the items on that schedule is for Oct. 5/6th down at the Mid Atlantic small craft festival, in St. Michael’s, MD. It’s a gathering of people who build, and use, small boats powered by oar, sail, and engine.
In the past a few of us have attended individually, and one year we had about 5 Shopbot built boats on display. This year we’re going to try and sort of “blend in” a User’s group, with some boatbuilding information as well. My main reason for writing this note is to suggest that if you have already built a boat with your ‘Bot, it might be fun to bring it down for a day of splashing around with other similar craft. And if you haven’t tried to build a boat with your ‘Bot yet, this might be a good opportunity.
I’ll bring down a few, and probably camp in their hay field (if they still allow it..) I’m sure Bill Young will be able to find something around the shop to drive over. And I’m going to nag Brady Watson to finish his Weekend dinghy in the next few weeks as well. There are usually close to one hundred small boats of all flavors, shapes, and sizes and the workmanship on many of them is hard to believe. There are plenty of free plans out there for building boats out of sheet goods, and there are some great starter programs for designing hulls as well.
At the least if you can’t physically make plans to attend the small craft festival please try to send pictures of some of the boat projects you have done/are doing and we’ll make a “marine gallery” of sorts.
I’m waiting for a call back from the museum regarding the full schedule, and when I get any info I’ll post links here on this thread.
If you have any questions about this you can also reach me at; campshopbot@shopbottools.com (mailto:campshopbot@shopbottools.com)

I recently looked for the SBP file of the Dinghy on the SB web site and could not find it. Anyone know if its still on the site that I perhaps missed.

I have all the parts cut, but it is not assembled yet. Do computer renderings count?

Danny,

Thanks. I designed the hull in the free HULLS program, exported in dxf, then imported into TurboCad 5, then into Rhino 2 where I did some fairing and lofting. I also added the "doghouse", the deck, dog platform, etc. in Rhino. I used Rhino's unroll surface feature to flatten everything, then added holes for the stitches (it's stitch and glue construction) and laid everything out on 4'x8' virtual sheets of plywood, and finally exported in dxf and opened in PW where I did the toolpathing. Now that I type it all out it seems like a lot of work, but it sure was fun. Can't wait to put it together (hopefully while my dog is still alive) and get it out in the marsh. Not shown in the rendering is a sliding hatch and door that covers the aft end of the cabin. The dog ramp folds up and covers the forward end. The cabin should be large enough for two hunters to hunker down in case of really bad weather.

I can't remember where I got the water graphic, but I found it through a Google search of water textures or something like that.
