View Full Version : Zero not where it was meant to be
I had a situation today that I drew my part center at 0,0 on the drawing board using Aspire it was a Christmas ornament for my Grandchildren I did all of the tool paths from that drawing, established my 0,0 in the center of the work piece and then set Z zero and to my surprize when I started the program to run, the machine went to -12.xxx,-17,xxx I hit the panic switch and reset everything then went in to shop bot editor and sure enough that is where it was going. So my question is why did this occure I have run dozens of parts and this is the first time it occured, I guess I will be looking at the editor before I start the next program I have gone back to the program and still cannot find what I have done different from the past. any help would be appreciated.

Carl,
Based on my own expeience, you may have forgoten to reset your X and Y axis to Zero (Z2 command) after locating your tool to its new 0,0 center.

larry I did reset to 0,0 the problem is when I looked at the code that was generated it stated to go to -12. and -17 and I have no reason why that code was generated when the part is draw at 0,0 and all of the tool path were generated from that position it is like the whole part got offset some how?

Carl,
How big is the part? If it was say 34 x 24" and the part was designed with the origin in the center of the part, it would go to -17, -24 to get to that lowest location.
Hi Bob
Sorry for delay we were out of power for 37 hours.
The part was 7 1/2 inches sq so I do not see how this has happened.

It seems to me that regardless of what program you create a toolpath in, the toolpath only creates code for the "virtual workspace" size of your project so if it is 12"x12" it should only move within that 12x12 space relative to your 0,0
The only other variable is where your 0,0 is set on the table relative to the part placement. Many times i do things so repiticiously that i don't recall specifically resetting things. Try reproducing your toolpaths and check them against the new code.

are you in New England? We were on the hairy edge of the ice, never lost power but 5 miles from us, is still out since Thursday.. 10 miles from us expects to get power back on Wednesday and 25 miles from us cancelled school for the kids most of the week!
That was one ugly ice storm!
I would go back to Aspire and see if you are working in metric?
What post processor did you use? I do not yet have Aspire (next month I hope) but maybe the post processor choice is wrong?
Build a 12" x 12" square and post processor that and see if the x + y go from -6 to +6 on both access..

There have been a few times when the machine does something crazy. A few times the machine has gone to 0,0 to start a file and then tried to run off the board on the X axis. After restarting the same file, it ran fine. Once I hit JH, and it ran back to home, stopped for a moment, and then decided to keep going and wanted to run off the board again. Good thing for the physical stops. I performed a small exorcism and everything was fine. JR
Hi Yes I live in the Northwest corner of Connecticut it seems that the ice line was at 1300feet and above, most of the property is at 1300feet the top of the hill is 1580 and it looked like a war zone.Back to the problem I went and started a new drawing and did all new tool paths this time I checked the shop bot editor first and it is ok so there is something it the orginal drawing that is causing the problem I just cannot put my finger on it.
