This is from a peice of dimensional lumber I cut from some logs I pulled out of the swamp. Its Oak. about 3" thick. You can see heavy checks and even some worm holes. There is a flag texture in the dish that is hard to see in the pics.

Very Nice! You may want to get advice on the best finish to bring out all the details (i'm no expert) but i have used gel stains to good satisfaction. Again...good job!

I was definitely thinking about a gel stain a light colored one that could really bring out some of the details.

The wood was definitely dry but I am getting some significant warping... about 4" with the grain. The work is big enough 26"x18" that you don't really notice. I wonder if I should ignore it or try to steam the part back and brace the back.

Danish oil is a favorite of mine for hardwood that has a nice natural color. You can test for the results by wiping the wood with some paint thinner. The thinner evaporates quickly and won't do anything that is permanent
By the way, the project is gorgeous.
