I had a guy in to run a bobcat in my yard and he knocked off a small place of bark down to the skin of a tree and I wondered if anyone knew what would be best to doctor that place up so it doesn't kill the tree? I have seen people put a substance that looked like tar on but never knew what it was.

Where I live we have a gardener on the radio that said just to let the tree mend itself. If you put something on it then it will be an invitation to bugs.

right do nothing. the tree will heal faster then if you put something on it. this is from someone that took too many landscape tech classes when he did not want to do that job later (G)

does the same apply for big roots that stick above the ground a bit? It has bark on it also.

Trim off any broken or splintered wood with a sharp knife or saw then leave it alone - except for watering unless the ground is already wet.
