Hi,
In past posts it has been mentioned that Dell computers don't work very well with the ShopBot.

I plan to replace the shop computer soon and am leaning heavily towards a Dell Laptop. I've used one in my job for a couple of years and really like it.

The threads I've read about them on the forum indicate that the big issue with the desktop Dell's are poor communication with the Bot which is solved by installing a PCI USB 2.0 card and a USB 2.0 hub.

The hub is no problem but I don't know enough about laptops to know if the USB can be modified.

Is anyone out there using a Dell laptop with their Bot?
If so is it working alright?

Thanks in advance.

Scott

I have an older Dell laptop circa 2003. It's an Inspiron 2650. I've run my Shopbot with it for two years without a computer related problem. My bot is a benchtop with the 4g board.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I feel confident about getting a Dell now.

Mitch,
You can still get XP on a Dell Laptop but not on all models by the looks of it.

I just purchased a new dell with xp for my office. It is a precision laptop. I know on the business computers you can get xp but you might not be able to on the consumer site. I always buy mine from the small business site, that way your technical support is still american based.

Jeff.. do you mean you don't like talking to someone in India or pakistan when you have a problem?

Lets just say... that we have a hard time communicating with each other, me with my southern accent and them with their accent.

I just got a newsletter from Dell and June the 18th is the last day that you can order a Dell laptop with Windows XP. FYI

Scott at SB told me to avoid Vista like the plague. I hope the Dell laptop works, I just bought one because that is what they were using at SB when I took their beginners class last month and I'm in the process of hooking up my dust collection and vacuum table now!

Raymond,

I just ordered my laptop. I'll be getting a Dell Vostro with XP Pro.
I know others are using Vista with their Bots without any trouble but I just couldn't go there.

I cut the grids in my vacuum table last night and installed a rudimentary but functioning dust collection system last weekend.
I would recommend starting with the rigid styrofoam for your first cuts. I did and didn't snap my 1/8" taper ball nose because of it. :-)

Cheers,
Scott
