I was contracted to produce the prototypes and possibly some production. It's nothing grand but I thought I'd share the process I used as it is simple and effective with decent results.

I used veneered MDF and finished the face with shellac followed by a coat of satin poly. After trying VERY WELL I placed a 1/4 sheet blank over one zone and applied both fein vacs for hold down. I used a 1/8" straight cutting bit with a 5/8" CEL.
I machined face down and placed a keyhole using a keyhole bit first. Then machined the profile in 3 passes using a spiral down cutting method.
To finish the back and side I submerged the entire cross in a container of waterbased dark brown stain for 30 to 60 seconds. Then removed it and used a spray bottle of water to clean the face while laying on a wire rack. After it dried that was it.
