I'm partial to dell and shop their online outlet store a lot. outlet.dell.com I know some guys here don't like dell but I've never had a problem.
Beyond that for a controler, the simpler the better. No fancy sound cards, mega video cards and hardware. The more hardware and bells and options the more drivers taking memory and possibly going wonky on you.

I'm running a Dell Vostro 1710 laptop.
It's working great for me.
Of course you pay more for the 17" screen but the bigger laptops also have a proper numerical keypad which is really nice.

you most likely will end up with a used machine since you want to run xp. a good usb 2 setup is the only critical thing. more memory does not hurt. and a sound card is about it.

Get yourself a newer faster computer on which to do your design work, and do a fresh re-install of XP on your current system for the ShopBot (and leave off everything else).
Requires some degree of computer experience, but a good excuse to get yourself a new system.

Most of the big name (Dell for one) small business line of computers still come with XP installed (they sell you Vista also, but don't install it)

Thanks to all for the responses. I think I'll keep my eye on E-bay for a refurbished Dell. (My current (office?) desktop is an HP and neither of the CD drives still work).
