Single cut vs. Double cut carbide burrs: What is the difference in cutting characteristics? Which is more aggressive...which leaves a smoother surface? What are any other reasons to use one over the other? Thanks,

Charlie

I'm not a big fan of burrs since they don't really allow for chip extraction very well. Aside from this, they are not held to close tolerances on the shape or size compared to a metal cutting end mill (ball or straight) or a beter brand name router bit (Onsrud). So depending on what brand/shape/model you use, your parts may come off the machine off spec.

They are good for cutting foam and other materials that don't have glue or pitch in them. They are really made for grinding soft metals like AL. I'd try to steer clear from burrs as much as I could and find a spiral fluted tool with better specs and more efficient chip extraction. You might want to experiement with 4-flute end mills, which would offer good chip extraction, and leave a smooth finish.

Brady, I use carbide and diamond burrs ONLY for fine detail carving in hand held dremel-type tools. I wouldn't consider putting one in my router.

Thanks Harold, that's the information I was looking for.
