I know this topic has been broached often and i know these motors can run hot, however after running my indexer for about a half hour I touched it and it was so hot that it left red burn marks on my skin, is that reasonable?

Jack, I was stunned when I measured 230 degree temps on my new 7.2:1 alpha motors after touching them and getting burned. In my case I learned this was normal when running them heavily. If you can get a thermometer and post the actual temp that might help determine if it is normal.

Well my "DIGIT"al thermometer read a temp of "oh S***!" when i touched it.

I find my "DIGIT"al thermometer reads the same starting at about 140 degrees. I've never been able to correlate the dB of the annunciation with the actual degree value though. :-)

I think it has more to do with "pitch"!

Jack,
Give me an idea on the speeds you use when running your indexer.

Well it is usually set to 1 ips/ipm? not fast for move speed however the indexer seems to spin at a constant speed. Not sure that tells you anything tho

one thing i just thought of was the tension of the tailstock pushing into the material. I just run it up to the material screw it in till good and snug, give it a little tension and lock it. I use a live center also.

The heat is normal. ShopBot now places warning stickers on the indexers to prevent people from getting burned. Depending on how much weight/friction the indexer has to overcome, and the speed at which it needs to do it, the temps can get up there.
