I'm looking for the simplest gear program.I'd like to make some kinetic sculptures. Most of the programs I've located are expensive, need autocad or are too involved.

G'day Brian
have a look at this.. http://woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html
Besides the template there is other interesting info there.. I haven't used it to make any gears myself.. have just tried it out a few time. .. I have a program for solidworks that makes gears..

Inkscape has a render tool that generates gears and it can save files in DXF format.

There was a thread on gears a few weeks here is the link to the thread http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/312/46216.html?1254074299
The above thread had me interested in gears and I wrote a program that will produce the tooth profile of a gear. It will output a dxf drawing and you can use cad software to finish the gear.

here is a link to a video using Aspire to complete the gear.

It is done similar in ArtCam you will use the Block Copy/Rotate.

Brian
just had a look at the gear template again.. and you don't need to get a dxf.. you simply print to pdf from the screen and then open the pdf in partworks..
join the vectors and you are set to go..
