What's the proper way to quickly measure bit CED, especially complex ones like single-flute compression spirals, with a digital caliper?
Or is it better to do test cuts, and then measure those instead (like you do with V bits)?

Jeff,
The manufacturer should clearly state what the CED is. If they don't, then take the tail of your digi-cal and measure from the tip down (with bit pointing towards ceiling.)

woops, I don't mean CED. I mean width. Diameter. I thought CED stood for Cutting Edge Diameter. Sorry there.
Just trying to figure out how to double-check the width of a cutter, esp. when it's a single-flute and has a complex profile.
Am I better off just making test cuts and measuring those?

I don't know of a way to directly measure the diameter of a single flute bit without some sort of fancy equipment. I think a test cut may be the best way.
Brady I think your suggestion is for CEL - Cutting Edge Length. CED does stand for Cutting Edge Diameter.

Yes - thanks David. I do know what the acronyms stand for, but it must have been a LCLI (low caffeine level interval) when I responded.
A test cut/drill is definately the easiest way.

If in doubt I do a very slow plunge in something softer than wood or plywood like MDF and then measure the hole.

Brady, I had no doubt you knew the difference between CEL and CED, but I thought it best to clear up Jeffrey's confusion. I guess that's what working for 170 hours straight will do to you!!
