Assume that i want to do as much on my bot as possible (not to limiting the scope of what i could do by my bit inventory) The description of the starter kit isn't exactly specific and it dosn't tell me what i can do with them, so if you had say $500.00 to spend on bits (or more) what would you buy?

There is no one-bit fits everybody solution, but the SB starter kit is pretty good. In it is everything to surface your spoilboard, do v-carving, general cutting with straights and spirals and even a 1/8" ball for doing 3D.
I would start with the kit and cut different projects. I would goto www.pricecutter.com (http://www.pricecutter.com) and buy some cheapie straight, vee and spiral bits that you are going to burn, break and ruin...Then as my abilities got better I would search for tools designed specifically for the material at hand.

A handful of solid carbide!
Seriously, I would personally recommend to a starter to get a good and vast collection of carbide tipped tooling first. There are MANY shapes (from slot bit to surfacer, ball end sometime refer as bull nose, V bits and more), there are affordable (read cheap for many) and are generally readily available at the local store.
I remember that I didn't really know what I needed when I started Boting. Spending on tooling that end up not being not use is waste money (I probably have 200.00$ worth of bits sitting because I really don't like 'em; from badly ground Taiwan V-bits to HSS try outs). Breaking a 55.00$ compression solid carbide is really hurting the self ego...
Take your time and look for a local supplier that could get you various brands and shapes. Get used to searching on the Internet and buying on line. Look for metal tooling too.
If you ask me, 2000.00$ is still a pretty basic set of bits if you consider some spares...
