I turned a column round to 2.5" that was 65" long. When it got to about center the stock chattered and I had to exert minimal pressure upwards on stock to keep it from vibrating. Does anyone have suggestions for any type of stock support for long pieces while cutting? thanks

Jack, you might try a yoke under the piece. Turn a center section round, then cut and attach a yoke to a base or the bed to brace under the piece. Let the piece turn/rest in the cradle/yoke and I think you'll have good support.
Its done on conventional and legacy turnings but I don't have a spindle so only my best guess for a fairly simple fixture.
