While wandering through home depot last night, I came to realise that while most sheet goods are sold in 4x8 sizes, it appears that the mdf that they have is sold as 49x97, is there enough clearance on a 48x96 machine to support this amount of oversize?

The oversize is no problem. The oversize is designed primarily for cnc.

Gerald,
My PRT Alpha 5x10 has a travel range to Y= 61.5 and X= 124.5 so I would expect other models to be similarly oversized.

yes the full sheet works fine. though I have trouble getting a 4x8 center cut on the sheet. I cut the top sheet down to make alignment easy and it is always off more on one side. but not a problem.
