All the drawings were done in Rhino. The hulls were carved out of white oak with the Shopbot, the details (oar locks, seats, etc.) were cut with a laser.

Wow! These are beautiful.
Could you give and idea of the scale?
Were the hulls carved in pieces and assembled or from a solid block?

All the boats are 22" long.

The first and fourth hull are one piece (carved from a single blank) and the other two are two pieces (left and right sides carved and then glued together). The pictures do not do justice to the boats as you cannot see the lap-strake planking carved into the outside of the hulls (2, 3, and 4). It was a fun project and the client loved it.

Guy -

Did you design the hulls manually in Rhino? I have been playing with a beta release of Orca that uses variable you input to procedurally create a hull design - very cool!

William;

Yes, I designed the hulls in Rhino. Until this post I had never heard of Orca, is it a plugin for Rhino? All of the details were also designed in Rhino (so they would fit) exported to Corel and cut from there. My Laser is confused and thinks it's just an overgrown printer.
