I have been meaning to ask,
Is the Fein III shop vac sold by shopbot used for dust collection or is it for a vacuum hold down?

vacuum hold down. you need to move more air for dust collection.

It depends on the type of work you are doing. I have a bechtop Shopbot and quite a bit if my work is 3D carving. I use a Fein III with a two inch hose and a Oneida Dust Deputy. This setup handles my dust collection well. The CFM rating on this vacuum is about 130.

You missed it, He was asking it the Fein vac was for dust collection or vac hold down? And for Vac hold down you will need 2 on a 96x48 ShopBot or larger
I thought it could be used for either

All three of the Fein vacs are good for vacuum hold down and a single one has worked fine for me for over three years for almost all my hold down needs from less than a square foot to 32 square feet of held down material.
I'm still using the Fein Mini that predated the Fein I and uses a 1.25" hose connected to 1.5" PVC plumbing pipe that distributes the suction to 4 zones on my 4x8 table.

My question on using a vacuum or Fein is---doesn't it heat up the vacuum quite a bit because there is no air movement after a vacuum is pulled on the object being held down? I would think that it would have a tendency to burn the motors rather quickly. Am I wrong?

no they run fine for hours at a time. thats a fien I don't know if a regular shopvac would hold up. they are too noisy.
From what I have read on this forum, the Feins don't burn out- that is what makes them ideal. They don't burn out like shopvacs do.

The Fein vacs have "By-pass" motors, meaning they use a seperate fan for cooling the motor. Most others use the air from the suction to cool them. This is what makes the Fein's more suitable for hold down.
