View Full Version : Heart shaped box

Does anyone have a dxf of a heart. The plan was to cut a heart shaped jewelry box for my wife and daughter for Valentines day. After an hour and a half in PW I just couldn't get one to look right. Seems like at one of the jamborees a few years back they explained how to do this and it was simple, but now I've forgotten. So if anyone is nice enough to share a dxf or instructions on how to make one in PW I would be grateful.

Wayne,

Real quick heart:

Create a square on a 45%. (Essentially a diamond)
right click on each of the top two flats and convert to arc.

Viola.

scale, extrude, etc till your 'hearts' content

Joe,
In partwizard when i make my diamond it is all one piece so i can't select the different sides and i'm unclear on how you are converting one side to an arc?

I am away from the PC with my SB stuff on it but I right click on the vectors in node edit mode and convert to arc is an option on the menu ... I will open this up when I get home tonight and see if I am standing too close to the exhaust pipe on this one.

Sorry if I created confusion, thats the exact opposite of my desire.

Jack in node editing you move the mouse half way between the point and convert line to arc, and then move to the next half way point and convert line to arc, and as Joe said Viola.

For those that have Flexisign, you need to convert square/diamond to outline before you can node edit.

Joe and Jeff,
Some of these answers are things that you first learn when you start with a shopbot but because of my memory problems I tend to forget many things. If any of you have ever watched Jepordy or "Are you smarter then a fifth grader" when an answer is revealed and you know you knew the answer but just couldn't pull it out of that bottomless pit called a brain, "well now you know the rest of the story" (for me)...Good day!

If you have Corel or Illustrator you can use any of your Dingbat fonts for cutting designs.

I took Wayne's idea and ran with it...

Mike, those look really good. I like the shape of yours better than mine. Where did you get the designs below the names on the lids?

I still have to round the edges on the lid and finish it. I plan to use poly for the finish since thats about all I'm familier with. I'm open to suggestions though.

And I really appreciate everyones help with the heart shape.

Wayne,

I just googled Heart and found an abundance of designs I could use on the laser. I didn't use any finish except clear spray on mine as the laser leaves a nice dark burned effect. You used such good-looking pieces of wood it seems a shame to change them. I think poly is a perfect solution.

I really like the way your box works with the overlapped sides. I'll have to try something like that next!

Hi, I have been watching this thread to see what results everyone came up with. These look great!!I wanted to make the wife one but ran out of time. Michael, What kind of laser do you have? Again both of these look great! Doug

Doug,

It's an old Epilog Legend 24. I got it in 2000 and it is still going strong. I had to replace the laser after about 7 years but that has been it. 12" x 24" max size and only 25 watts but it has served me well. It paid for itself years ago!

This from the Sketchup site. There's a lot of content on 3dwarehouse. I don't know about licensing though. I've also not played around with converting from Sketchup to DXF. I know it's possible. There was even a free plugin for V7 at one point but I don't know the status of that either.
