As you may have read yesterday, I trashed my table planing bit. I had to have a replacement for today so I bought a 1 1/4" hinge mortising bit from Home Depot last night. Today I am looking into getting a different replacement primarily because the HD bit has a 1/4" shaft and that makes me a bit nervous when taking a .1" Planing Cut 1 inch wide.

I was trying to think if there was any reason that I could not get double use out of a bit by buying one that could be used for more than just planing. I was of a T slot bit from Woodtek. Woodworker.com offers it here: http://www.woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=942-879&CARTID=200710113994540092--1

or a dado clearing bit from Grizzly offered here: http://www.grizzly.com/products/c1261

though they are supposed to have a 2.5" bit I can't find one.

Ryan, if the body of the planing bit isn't trashed only the carbide, you might give Centurion tools a call. They were able to take the bit and retooth it with removeable tips. Just a thought.

it would be nice to have removable tips. I want the 2.5 surfacing but bit at 200.00 it is going to wait. the 1.5" mortise cleaning bit is only 40.00 it will let you plunge and thats a nice feature the surface
bit won't let you do.
