My computer is getting full and slowing down and wondered if anyone knew of a app that would scan the computer, list all folders with sizes and make a report or chart so i can go in and take some of my shopbot creative files and other stuff and write to a cd to make room.

Also, and i think this might be some kind of virus but ANYTIME i stick a blank cd in to make a cd the computer reboots no matter how i do it.
Any clues how to fix that? If i stick in a prewritten cd its fine.

If searching by file sizes I usually just right click start - explore - select your drive - up top click the far right drop down menu and select details. Then you can just click the size header (click right where it says "size"). It will sort everything by file sizes. Hope thats what you meant.

Another option I use that is very cool... http://www.voidtools.com

This thing is free and very very fast. Just type in part of a file name you remember and BLAM its there in front of you. You can also arrange results by filesize I just discovered.

I use Jdiskreport It is free and shows all your files by size.

Start->Run-> "cmd"
"DIR C:\ > C:\DirList.Txt /s /o-s"

This will produce a text file in the root directory of your C: drive containing every file in every folder on the C: drive, sub-sorted by file size, in descending order in every sub=folder on the drive.

It looks like this:
*********************************************
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 1805-ABFB

Directory of C:\

Jack,

I think the real problem is your working too hard and making too much money.

So here's a good solution. Take some of the money and go on vacation and help out the economy. Were depening on you!

If you take the output file from the DOS command and leave only the lines with the file information, you could import it in Excel and make your analysis there. I think you could open the file and tell Excel that the info is delimited with a SPACE.

if your system is slowing down it is not from a full drive unless your getting the message your low on space. it is time to clean the os and reinstall. that's the only way to really speed things up without a big upgrade.

After analyzing your files, you may want to run disk cleanup and defrag in the accessories folder. If your files are fragmented on the drive it would cause it to slow down.

The CD issue could be a corrupted driver. You could go to control panel/device manager and re-install the CD driver. Could also be a problem with the drive or CD. Make sure all wire and cable connectors are on tight.

Joe,
I may take that vacation after all. I've alway wanted to go to Norman, Okla. because i've heard tales of a real odd ball genius artist guy who lives out there that i'd like to meet.

Dan- I think you are on the right track. I've never defragged but now i got too much stuff. The times i have tried to defrag in the past I usually leave it to defrag overnite and when i come back in the AM it is locked up and no longer functions.
I wish i could just buy another HD and use this main one as storage but they no longer give you cd's with your operating system on it to do that.

Or, get a big HD for secondary storage and migrate your data to it, leaving your smaller, primary drive just for the operating system and the application programs.

Because I play with so many different operating systems, I use removable drive trays. I can slap a different primary boot drive in my machine and leave the secondary drive in with access to my data.

There's an argument to be made for a dedicated file server, too. It's a fairly simple process to construct one, or you can pick up a fairly inexpensive NAS (network attached storage) box for < $300 with 500gig of storage.

Brett, what is the advantage of the NAS over a simple USB external hard drive...speed?

The other advantage to your first suggestion of a smaller primary with a large secondary storage drive is that you can afford to throw money at a smaller drive and get a hot rod, either a 10,000rpm or one of the new solid state devices. Even 80gb will hold the OS and all the apps you can imagine.

The NAS is accessible to every computer on the network as a data store. It simply gives you a centralized repository. Handy for doing backups as your critical data isn't scattered across several machines.

Newegg had as it's morning "Shell Shocker" deal today a 30gig SSD with SATA interface. $99.95 after rebate w/free shipping. 2.5" form factor.

For "old fashioned" IDE drives, be sure to put each drive on a separate IDE channel. That way they don't contend for bus bandwidth like they would if they shared the same ribbon cable.
