View Full Version : MDF Raised Panel
I just did a test cut with raised panel cutters and everything worked fine but how do I get the bottom corners square instead of the radius it has as can be seen in the attached photo.

Take a close look at the bit geometry; can the bit sharpen a corner? Pretty much only V tool bits can make 3D corner sharpening.
I don't think the bit can do it it is Onsrud 47-06
Thanks

The only thing i could think of might be to have a seperate vector alongside the mdf bit toolpath that might shapen the corners with a vbit. I used the whiteside equivelent to the onsrud bit for this panel i did. Buit my corners are not sharp either.

The profeesional door shops use a two pass technique. The first yields the result you have, they then do a second pass with a very small dianmter bit to "square" the corners. The doors are then foiled and you don't tent to notice that it's not perfectly square.

If the external profile is a chamfer, It is easily done with a vbit in a single pass, but to get good results you have to be very accurate with the angle of the cutter you use. Not all 90deg V Cutters are 90 degrees. It then just involves a bit of simple trigonometry.
If your profile is an ogee or a quad moulding or any other rounded moulding it is theoretically possible but it is very much more difficult and involves some very complicated maths and lots of testing. I have yet to perfect it so that it is repeatable but I am getting there.

Have you looked at FreeDoor? Heres the link: http://home.centurytel.net/bwclark/ Bruce and Mike have done a great job with it.

Great Program. Mike and Bruce are the best!
Oh BTW.. My tool guy is making me bits along with matching one tap radius chisel sets so that I can use a radius bit on the outside cut instead of Vbits if that makes any sense..
If not email me and Iwill send pics
