Hours of business sign for restaurant door front. Made from birch, coated with spar urethane. The wood is intentionally a large mixture of heartwood and sapwood. All lettering is 90deg v-carved. Dimensions are 30"x18.5".

Pictures follow, sorry I had to shrink them so much. In the future, I'm gonna have to remember to shoot things with simple backgrounds, because of the itsy-bitsy 50k attachment size on this forum.

Made two of them, these are the blanks side by side. On left is the hand painted version. On right is after sanding.

The hours inserts. Top is with clearcoat. Middle is painted. Bottom is after sanding.

The fully assembled sign. Lots of delicate hand painting on the road sign face.

That looks really nice. Good job on the graphic for the sign.

Butch,

If you look at the 2nd picture really close, you'll see there's a rabbet on top and bottom sides of each insert. The back of the sign has similar pocketing, such that the inserts mate slightly proud of the sign surface when pushed in fully. The sign pockets are slightly oversized, to accommodate changes in size of the inserts (they are wood), and the overall effect of the finish on the inserts.

Beautiful design! I really like the integration of the sapwood into the blank! Very sharp indeed.
