I have been digging in my stack of wood and finding a bunch of these kind of bugs and i've never seen them before, anybody know what they are and whether i need to be concerned about them in the woodpile?

Looks like what we call a stink bug.

I second that it is a stink bug. That is what we call them too. These things have been extra bad this year. My house is sealed up pretty tight and these things can still find ways in. I don't know how they do it, because they are a pretty good size.
I am pretty sure that they are of no concern for your woodpile.

Jack, is your wood pile "lumber" or "firewood"?

Do you plan to create a 3D model of the Stink Bug?

Phil - You made me laugh, that was a good one.
Maybe if we carved out about a 1 foot long stink bug, it would scare the rest away?

Ha, that's indeed a "bärfis" (fruit fart) as we call them in Sweden, sometimes called a bärsfis (beer fart).
I think they're entirely harmless -- well, unless your house is made of fruit.

Dana- your link confirms its a stink bug. I had just never seen them before. My wood pile is stacked lumber, although lots of it could be firewood if i get cold enough!
I could make a 3d model of it like a bug version of a scarecrow. They don't seem too active they just sit there don't crawl away or fly that i see. Well now i have company in the shop besides the squirrels that live in the boxes stored in the rafters and the stray cat that comes in and sleeps in the corner of sawdust.

Dana, good job of identification. I'm a retired Entomologist and I'm impressed. They are probably collecting in the wood pile to over winter. They don't eat wood. They only suck plant juices like an aphid.

It helps that the bug had so many identification marks. There are a lot of types of beetles I couldn't tell one from another.
